About us

The Cochin Cancer Society (CCS) is a renowned and reputed charitable society registered under the Travancore-Cochin Library, Scientific and Charitable Societies registration act, in 2004. Our fundamental focus has been on building solutions to accelerate progress towards health equity, centered around patients on the struggling end of the socioeconomic spectrum. Like any successful organization, we have been guided by the counsel and efforts of extraordinary human beings. The noble endeavours of two of the most distinguished doctors in Kerala, Dr. V.P. Gangadharan & the late Dr. Cherian Jacob, laid the foundations of the Cochin Cancer Society.

Although some types and stages of cancer are treatable, cancer is still a death sentence for many people around the world. It is one of the leading causes of death today. Fatalities due to cancer are usually because of late-stage diagnosis and inability to access treatment. More often than not, late-stage diagnosis happens as a result of lack of cancer awareness. Around 70% of cancer deaths occur in low and middle income families, simply because they don’t know enough to get an early diagnosis. Once diagnosed, the cost of treatment is usually too high for them to bear.

The CCS is helping bridge this divide by spreading awareness and helping patients financially. We aid cancer patients from across India who have come to us in hopes of better treatment and facilities. CCS provides accommodation along with facilities to cook their own food, for patients and their bystanders. We also arrange free transportation for patients to and from the hospital. CCS has also partnered with the Indira Gandhi Co-Operative Hospital to provide financial aid to patients in the form of subsidised treatment charges. The fact that CCS members and volunteers are almost entirely cancer survivors, relatives of cancer survivors, or doctors, ensure that patients seeking care are helped by people who truly understand them.
